    The attached document was published in the proceedings of the World Congress on Formal Methods in the Development Of Computing Systems, Toulouse, France, 1999, vol. 1709, pp. 369-387. The authors are French and some of the English sentences are a little awkward. Nonetheless it is easy to get an overview of what this technical paper is about. The “B method” mentioned throughout the paper is a formal method to guide software development from initial specification through program code. It is a partially automated method in that tools are available to support specification, design, proof of correctness and code generation. The following paragraph from the paper will not be completely clear to you but you should recognize some terms we have talked about: Moreover, the abstract model includes properties, enabling a consistency proof of the model. The safety properties which are explicitly expressed in the Software Requirements document are formalised in the model. They may appear in the invariant clause of the abstract model if they must be satisfied by all the states of the system; if they deal with the dynamics of a particular function, they are included as post-conditions in the specification of the operation which formalizes the function. The project described in this paper is one of the largest real-world software efforts to rely on formal methods. 1. What is the project? 2. Only part of the new system includes safety-critical software. Briefly describe what this software controls. 3. In the B Method mathematical results needed for the consistency proof are called lemmas. The lemmas that must be proven are produced by a tool (called a proof obligation generator) in a language that corresponds to first order logic. An automated proof tool attempts to prove each lemma, but if that fails, then humans work with an “interactive proof tool” to complete the proof. By the end of this project, how many lemmas were proven and how many had to be done “interactively”? 4. How many bugs were found in the program code (Ada programming language) by testing on the host computer, the target computer, on-site, and after the system was put into operation?
